“Do we cry because we feel sorry for the person who has died — or because we pity ourselves?”
This question runs as a subtle undercurrent in the Japanese drama Renoir. The film follows 11-year-old Fuki, whose world begins to waver as her father’s serious illness progresses. The adults around her neither speak about their feelings nor show them, so Fuki starts to observe her surroundings with sharp attention: curious, independent, and on her own terms. Director Hayakawa Chie portrays grief, growing up, and loneliness in 1980s Tokyo with restraint and sensitivity, building meaning from small moments and lingering glances.
