Okiku and the world

Sakamoto Junji, Japan

せかいのおきく, 2023, 90 min, K12

It is 1858 in Edo, now Tokyo, and pals Chuji and Yasuke start a business of collecting human feces and selling it to farmers as fertilizer. During these affairs Chuji meets Okiku, a beautiful samurai’s daughter, whose family has fallen into poverty. Sakamoto creates a delightful mixture of social commentary, class analysis, a romance story and some potty humor.
