Kokuho is a complicated, sweeping story of two men, who practice, perform and compete side by side from teenage to adulthood under the kabuki master Hanjiro in the demanding world of kabuki.
Lee Sang-il created a sensation in Japan, when against all odds a serious art drama about kabuki became the highest-grossing live-action film of all time. Kokuho became a cultural phenomenon that renewed public interest in kabuki as a traditional theatrical art and inspired a devoted fandom, with many fans seeing the film multiple times.
