Hallan
Ha Myungmi, South Korea
The Jeju Massacre of 1948 has not received as much attention as the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. Nobelist Han Kang described the events in her novel We Do Not Part, and now we have the film Hallan, in which the tragic events are seen through the eyes of a mother and her 6-year-old daughter.
When inhabitants of Jeju Island started revolting against South Korea’s government, they were labeled as sympathisers of the North. What followed was a massacre of civilians. But who is right in this complex political situation? As the protagonists of the film say: “Even if a good world comes, but my family is all dead, what kind of good world is that?” The title of the film refers to a flower that stubbornly survives on the volcanic Mt. Halla.
