Blue Boy Trial
Iizuka Kasho, Japan
The famous 1965 ‘blue boy trial’ of a doctor who performed gender-affirming operations on trans women, spread awareness on LGBTQ+ issues in Japan – long before the term was introduced. Realized by a predominantly LGBTQ+ crew and cast, Iizuka Kasho’s film introduces the sympathetic heroine Sachi, who is about to settle into a quiet home life with her fiancé but bravely decides to take the witness stand at court. After long questioning, the judge asks Sachi a simple question: “Are you happy?”
