Becoming Human
Ly Polen, Cambodia
A young journalist, Hai, visits an old run-down movie theater to take photographs before it’s demolished. Inside he meets a woman, Thida, who turns out to be the guardian spirit of the movie theater. With the theater facing demolition, there is no longer need for a guardian spirit. This leaves Thida with the choice of a rebirth as a human or becoming a roaming spirit.
But is it worth being born again into a world, where life is filled with suffering? The characters are burdened by traumas of war and the shameless exploitation of nature happening around them. The film is filled with lingering beautiful shots that leave time and space for the viewers to reflect.
