The only festival of contemporary Asian cinema in Finland, Helsinki Cine Aasia, will take place again from 15th to 18th March 2018. The festival offers a fresh take on Asian film culture and the most interesting, ferocious and delicate films of the moment from East and Southeast Asia. In addition to film screenings, the festival programme also includes discussion.
Several of the films to be screened in March have been sourced fresh to the Helsinki Cine Aasia programme from the most important Asian film festivals or through direct contacts in Asia.
In preparation for the programming of this year’s festival, the festival committee went to Busan International Film Festival in South Korea and to Japan to Tokyo International Film Festival, Tokyo FilmEx and Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival.
Teasers from the programme will be announced once a week on the festival’s Facebook page and the full festival programme will be published on the 27th of February 2018 on the festival’s website. The first film to be unveiled from the Helsinki Cine Aasia 2018 programme is Hirokazu Kore-eda’s powerfully moving court drama The Third Murder (Sandome no satsujin) that, in Finland, can only be seen at Helsinki Cine Aasia Festival.
Hirokazu Kore-eda is known to many festival fans already from 2014 as his movie Like Father, Like Son was shown as the opening film of the year. This time, however, Kore-eda focuses on the intensive relationship between two characters from opposite sides of the law, a defender of the law and a law-breaker.
The festival screenings will be held at Cultural Factory Korjaamo and at the traditional movie theatre Orion. Tickets can be purchased online from early March onwards or during the festival from the screening locations.
